Filters for Manchester's Canals and Reflections — A CPL and ND Guide
Manchester is a city built on water it has largely forgotten about. Ninety-odd miles of canal thread through it — the Rochdale, the Bridgewater, the Ashton — and they are the reason this city photographs better than its weather suggests. Still water doubles everything above it. A brick mill becomes two brick mills. A cobalt blue-hour sky becomes a sky and its twin, with the viaduct suspended between them.
Filters are how you control that, and the most important thing to know is that the standard advice will ruin your best shot. Every guide tells you a polariser removes reflections. On Manchester’s canals, the reflection is very often the photograph.

The short answer
If you buy one filter for Manchester, buy a circular polariser — but learn to rotate it both ways. A good CPL costs £60–£150 and is the only filter whose effect cannot be replicated in post-processing.
If you buy two, add a 6-stop ND. It is the strength that actually gets used here: enough to smooth canal water in daylight, not so much that you are standing around for two minutes per frame in the drizzle.
Buy the 10-stop third, if at all. And ignore graduated NDs until you have a specific reason — Manchester’s skylines are too irregular for a hard grad to sit cleanly.

Filter prices move constantly and the same glass is often rebadged, so treat these as bands rather than quotes.
The polariser problem nobody explains
A circular polariser cuts polarised light — glare off water, glass, and wet stone. Rotate it one way and reflections disappear: the canal goes dark and transparent, you can see the shopping trolley on the bottom, the glass at Spinningfields stops bouncing white sky at you.
That is genuinely useful. It is also, at most Manchester canal locations, the opposite of what you want.
The shot at Castlefield Canals is the viaduct doubled in still water. The shot on the Rochdale Canal at Royal Mill is the mill façade doubled. Kill the reflection and you have deleted half the composition and replaced it with brown water.
So use the rotation deliberately, in both directions:
- Rotate to minimum polarisation (reflection at its strongest) when the reflection is the subject — canal basins, the Irwell at Greengate, wet paving after rain in Albert Square.
- Rotate to maximum polarisation when reflection is noise — glare on a glass façade, a hazy sky you want deeper, wet leaves in Fletcher Moss that are bouncing white light instead of showing green.
- Rotate to somewhere between far more often than either extreme. This is the part most people skip. A CPL is a dial, not a switch, and partial polarisation — cutting the surface haze while keeping the reflection legible — is usually the best-looking result on water.
Look through the viewfinder while you turn it. The effect is completely visible in real time, and no amount of theory beats watching the canal change.
The 90-degree rule
A CPL works most strongly when you shoot at roughly 90 degrees to the sun, and barely at all when shooting directly into or directly away from it. If the filter seems to be doing nothing, check where the sun is before assuming it’s faulty.
There’s a corollary that matters on wide lenses: at 16mm and wider, your frame spans enough sky that polarisation is strong in one part of it and weak in another, producing an uneven, banded sky. On ultra-wide canal shots, either back off the polarisation or take the filter off.
The cost you’re paying
A CPL eats 1.5 to 2 stops of light. On a grey Manchester afternoon that is not free — it may push you from 1/125s to 1/30s. Take it off when it isn’t earning its place, especially in low light where you need every stop.
ND filters: which strength actually gets used
Neutral density filters buy you long shutter speeds in daylight. The strength is measured in stops, and each stop doubles the exposure time.

What each is for, here:
- 3-stop — mild. Useful for putting a little movement into water on an already-dull day. Rarely the filter you reach for; Manchester is dim enough that you often get there without help.
- 6-stop — the one to own. On a typical overcast Manchester afternoon it lands you in the 1–4 second range, which is exactly where canal water goes smooth without going dead, and where a passing narrowboat becomes a soft streak instead of a hard object.
- 10-stop — the specialist. It gets you to 30–60 seconds, which flattens water to polished glass and pulls cloud into streaks across the sky. Genuinely dramatic on a bright, breezy day over the open water at MediaCityUK and Salford Quays, where there’s enough sky and enough wind for the clouds to move visibly. On a still grey day it just makes everything take a minute longer.
Skip the variable ND unless convenience genuinely outranks quality for you. At their stronger settings they produce a dark cross-band across the frame and unpredictable colour, and the good ones cost more than two fixed filters.
Where NDs are pointless
Blue hour. This catches people out. At blue hour your exposures are already 4–20 seconds because the light has gone — the blue hour guide covers the timing. Adding a 6-stop ND takes you to six minutes, during which the sky visibly changes colour and the whole point is lost. NDs are a daylight tool. When the light drops, take them off.
The Manchester locations, and what to put on the lens
Castlefield basin — CPL, dialled part-way
Castlefield is the city’s best reflection location and the clearest case for restraint. The basin sits low, sheltered on three sides, so the water is often nearly still without any help. Use the CPL to cut surface haze and let the viaduct reflection strengthen, then stop. If the water is genuinely choppy, add the 6-stop and let a 2–4 second exposure do the flattening.
Rochdale Canal at Ancoats — 6-stop, low angle
Along Royal Mill and Murrays’ Mills the canal corridor is narrow and the brick is warm. A 6-stop at 1–4 seconds smooths the surface enough to hold the mill reflection while keeping some texture. Get the camera low — closer to the water means more reflection in frame — which is a tripod problem as much as a filter one, covered in the tripod guide.
Salford Quays and MediaCity — 10-stop, for the sky
This is the one place in the guide where a 10-stop consistently earns its keep. MediaCityUK and The Lowry sit on wide open water with a lot of visible sky and reliable wind off the basin. A 60-second exposure turns the water to sheet metal and drags the cloud into streaks behind the buildings. Bring a lens cloth: open water and wind means spray.
Wet streets — CPL, rotated to keep the shine
After rain, Canal Street, the Northern Quarter setts and the paving at Albert Square turn reflective. Here the polariser is a hazard: rotate it wrong and you erase the neon reflection that is the entire reason you came out in the rain. Rotate to keep the reflection and use the filter only to control blown highlights on the wettest patches. Often the right answer is no filter at all.
Glass and modern architecture — CPL, full strength
The one place to use a polariser conventionally. At Spinningfields, New Jackson and The Blade, glass façades bounce white sky and flatten the form. Full polarisation restores the glass tone and lets you see into the building. Watch the sky banding on anything wider than about 20mm.
Screw-in, magnetic, or square system?
Screw-in is cheapest and smallest. The catch is that filters are thread-specific, so a 77mm CPL won’t fit a 67mm lens. Buy for your largest thread and use step-up rings for everything smaller — a £12 ring set saves buying the same filter three times. Screw-in filters are also slow and fiddly to change with cold wet hands, and cross-threading a filter on a towpath in the rain is a genuinely miserable experience.
Magnetic systems solve exactly that. A magnetic 6-stop like the Kase Wolverine snaps on and off one-handed in seconds. For canal work in Manchester weather this is a real, daily quality-of-life difference — probably the most underrated upgrade in this whole guide. You pay for it, and you are buying into one brand’s ecosystem.
Square systems like the NiSi V7 use a holder and 100mm plates, so one set of filters serves every lens via cheap adapter rings, and they are the only practical way to use graduated NDs. They cost more, add bulk, and can vignette on ultra-wides. Worth it if you own several lenses or shoot filters constantly; overkill for one CPL.
On graduated NDs: the standard argument for them is balancing a bright sky against a dark foreground. Manchester’s skylines are jagged — towers, cranes, viaduct ironwork — and a hard grad crossing that outline leaves a visible dark band across anything sticking up. Bracket two exposures and blend instead. A grad kit like this one makes more sense out at Sale Water Park or over Heaton Park, where the horizon is actually a horizon.
What cheap filters actually cost you
Filter quality matters more than most gear, because you are putting an extra piece of glass in front of glass you paid a lot for.
- Colour cast. Cheap 10-stops go strongly magenta or blue. It is correctable in RAW, but it costs you editing time on every frame and never quite comes back clean. “True colour” branded filters are addressing a real problem, not inventing one.
- Flare and ghosting. Uncoated filters throw reflections from every light source. At blue hour on Canal Street, with neon in frame, a cheap filter produces green ghosts opposite each sign.
- Softness. Budget glass costs you fine detail — exactly the brick and ironwork texture that makes Manchester architecture worth shooting.
- Vignetting. Thick mounts on wide lenses darken the corners. Look for “slim” or “low profile” mounts if you shoot wide, and avoid stacking a CPL on top of an ND on anything wider than 24mm.
The rule of thumb: spend roughly a tenth of the lens’s value on a filter for it. A £60 filter on a £1,200 lens is sensible. A £15 filter on it is vandalism.
Care, near water
Canal towpaths, river banks and the open water at the Quays all put moisture on your front element, and a droplet you can’t see in low light will quietly soften a whole session.
- Carry a microfibre cloth in an outer pocket, not buried in the bag.
- A rocket blower clears grit before you wipe — dragging canal-side dust across a coated filter is how you scratch it.
- Rinse salt-free but wipe dry after a windy day at Salford Quays; spray dries to a haze that shows up as flare.
- Keep filters in a case, not loose in a pocket with keys.
What to buy, by budget
Starting out — one filter
A decent CPL, sized for your largest lens thread, plus step-up rings . The Hoya HD is the value pick. That single purchase covers glass, wet streets and reflection control across every location in this guide.
The practical kit — most people stop here
CPL plus a fixed 6-stop ND , both screw-in, both sized to your largest thread. This handles daylight canal smoothing and reflection control, which between them cover the overwhelming majority of Manchester filter situations.
Serious about water — magnetic
Move to a magnetic set such as the Kase Wolverine for one-handed swaps in the rain, and add a 10-stop for the Quays. This is where filter use stops being a faff and starts being routine.
Multiple lenses, or you want grads — square system
The NiSi V7 or equivalent, with adapter rings per lens. One set of filters for the whole bag, and the only sane route to graduated NDs.
The honest recommendation
- Most people: a good CPL, sized to your largest thread, plus step-up rings. Learn to rotate it in both directions and you have most of the value in this article.
- Add second: a fixed 6-stop ND. Not a variable, not a 10-stop.
- Only if you shoot the Quays or bright days often: the 10-stop.
- If you shoot canals year-round in Manchester weather: go magnetic, and stop losing frames to cross-threaded filters with cold hands.
And the single most valuable habit costs nothing: look through the viewfinder while you rotate the polariser. On this city’s canals, the reflection you’re about to delete is usually the photograph.
