Image Licensing

The photographs on this site come from two places, and they carry different terms. Every image records its photographer, its credit line and — where one applies — its licence in the page’s structured data, so the answer for any individual picture travels with the picture.

Photographs by James Sheriff

Photographs credited to James Sheriff are my own work and remain my copyright. They are not released under a Creative Commons licence.

You are welcome to ask. Email j@sheriff.studio with the page the image appears on and a description of what you would like to use it for, and I will tell you whether I can license it and on what terms. Editorial, educational and non-commercial requests are usually straightforward.

Creative Commons photographs

Most of the photographs on this site are not mine. They are Creative Commons licensed files sourced from Wikimedia Commons and Geograph, reproduced here under the terms of the licence each photographer chose.

For those images:

  • The photographer named in the credit is the licensor, not this site. I cannot grant you rights to their work, and no permission from me is needed or meaningful.
  • The licence travels with the image. Most are CC BY or CC BY-SA, which let you reuse the photograph — including commercially — provided you credit the photographer and, for BY-SA, share any adaptation under the same licence.
  • Go to the source for the authoritative terms. The credit line records the photographer, the licence and where the file came from. The file page at Wikimedia Commons or Geograph is the canonical record of what you may do with it.

If a credit or licence recorded here is wrong or incomplete, I would rather know than not — please tell me and I will correct it.

Reporting a problem

If you believe an image on this site infringes your copyright, email j@sheriff.studio with the page URL and the image, and I will take it down while the claim is checked.
